Réunion Island Sights

The following scene shows the waterwheel of a former manioc mill of the Tour des Roches, situated just to the south-east of l'Etang de Saint-Paul. The cool spring waters make it a favourite bathing spot for the local children (la marmaille). The painting shows the waterwheel as it used to be, which was quite rusty at the time! Unfortunately the wheel has since been "restored" and now looks less jagged and safer; but in the process it has lost much of its former authenticity.

Watercolour of children playing beside a waterwheel near 'l'Etang de Saint-Paul,' "La roue marmaille," by William Walkington
La roue marmaille
Watercolour, signed Walkington and undated. Private Collection.
Chosen for a postcard illustration by the editor Agedis. The above reproduction is a scan of the postcard.

The Conservatoire botanique national de Mascarin is situated in Colimaçons, above the town of Saint-Leu. This former property of the Marquis de Chateauvieux has splendid views over the western coast and the Indian Ocean.

Watercolour of a creole building and plants reflected in a lake, "Conservatoire de botanique Mascarin," by William Walkington

Superbly situated, close to the Boucan Canot beach of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains (commonly called "Zoreille Land" by the Creoles), is Le Saint-Alexis Hotel. It used to host some of my watercolour exhibitions during my stay in Réunion Island. A major extension has since taken place, but it preserves the comfort and style of this luxury four-star accommodation, spa and restaurant.
