Teenage Production

The teenage drawing and paintings shown below have all suffered from haphazard storage, clumsy transport, or a lack of suitable protection by hermetic glazed frames! Nevertheless, they might still have a vague historical charm, or be of interest to my siblings and family.

Early teenage production

Steam Trains

I used to be particularly interested in GWR steam locomotives that were still operating in the 60's. The following paintings were either drawn from memory after trainspotting (SLS Special), or inspired by illustrations in Ian Allan books.

Drawings

The following drawing illustrates a view from one of my bedroom windows at our house in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. Box Cottage had previously been the home of the Poet Laureate C. Day-Lewis who wrote his first thriller "A Question of Proof" there. This bedroom window view shows neighbouring terrace houses.

Pencil sketch of the profile of an elderly lady, "Grandma "Winnie"", painted at Alderbrae by William Walkington, circa 1967.

My sister Fiona, who has this pencil sketch of my Scottish Grandmother Anna Winnifred Stuart Burnett Munro, thinks I drew it when I was 13 or 14. My brother Sandy thinks I would have been 15, and the drawing can therefore be dated as circa 1967. I have only a vague memory of drawing the profile in the living room of Alderbrae, Tain. The retro wooden frame, that I did not choose, took me by surprise, but I have since become used to it, and today it seems quite fitting for my Grandma "Winnie."

Programme Illustrations for a School Play

The following illustrations were drawn in pen and ink for a Dean Close School production of Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot." This well-known tragicomedy was performed in the Tuckwell Amphitheatre at Cheltenham during the evenings of the 13th and 14th June 1969. A fellow pupil, Hugh Quarshie, who played the role of Pozzo, was later to become a successful professional actor.

The following oil is the first out of two that I have painted with this media. It was created at Alderbrae, Tain, under the kind tuition of my Scottish Grandma Winnie.

School and home artwork

The still life watercolours that are shown below were painted in Mr Davis's art class at Dean Close School, Cheltenham. The pencil drawings were done at home, and were most likely inspired by, if not copied from, magazine illustrations.
